Just one day after Musk announced he was going to provide breathing masks to medical personnel, the first 50,000 of them had reached a doctor in Washington State. A day later, the California government announced that Musk had delivered 1,000 ventilators to the state. Tesla procured them in China and flew them to the USA, the CEO said. And in a Twitter message, he now made it clear that all such activities by Tesla and SpaceX should be free of charge, whether devices such as those initially bought in China or produced as planned as well.
A new Twitter post by Bill de Blasio prompted this statement by Musk. The Mayor of New York was one of the first to ask for help when Musk said a week ago that Tesla and SpaceX could produce ventilators if needed. That Friday morning, de Blasio wrote that he had spoken to Musk and that he would donate hundreds of ventilators to the city and state of New York, including public hospitals. He thanks for the great help. Another user asked Musk if he would also produce and sell the devices instead of just donating them. He got a clear answer: "We will give away all of our ventilators, whether we buy or produce them."
Tesla replicates Medtronic device
As also became known this week, Tesla plans to manufacture ventilators based on a current but not ultra-modern Medtronic design; preparations for this are progressing quickly, according to the CEO of the medical technology manufacturer. But on Twitter, Musk said at least in relation to Tesla that the company could make the most of it by getting ventilators to the right place at exactly the right time. There are many of them in warehouses, but they are stuck due to logistics, route planning or bureaucracy.
