Skin barrier function is a protective barrier which is made up of different factors of skin. Such as corneocyte cells, inter cellular lipid barrier, acid mantle & NMF. If any of these components is damaged or disturbed then total skin barrier function becomes weak & many skin problems start.
So, if you have damaged skin barrier, you may experience symptoms like dry skin, acne, red tender patches on skin, tight & rough skin.
Here are some causes of skin barrier damage:
1. Overwashing with a face wash or cleanser which contains harsh ingredients or strong surfactant like SLS.
2. Disturb skin ph balance
3. Over exfoliation
4. Pollution & UV rays
5. Stress & lack of sleep increase cytokine production in body.
6.overusing of products
7. Harsh/controversial skin care ingredients
8.Genetics & Ageing
Here are also some tips for repairing skin barrier:
*Follow a basic skin care routine :-
# treat your skin like a baby's skin. Follow the essential steps of a basic skin care routine. Like ,
1. Wash your face with a soft , mild, low ph cleanser which should be alcohol free.
2. Use a mild, gentle, alcohol free, moisturizing toner.
3. Then apply a serum containing Hyalorunic acid, niacinamide, or ceramides, because they repair & restore the skin barrier, prevent further damages & nourish your skin.
4. Next apply moisturizer containing HA, humectants, emollients, because these have moisture locking property.
5. Also use moisturizer containing niacinamide & panthenol.
6. Use natural oil as they are natural emollients, such as argon oil, rosehip oil, jojoba oil, almond oil, olive oil, grapeseed oil etc.
7. Use products containing soothing ingredients like aloe extract, calendula extract, chamomile extract, centella asiatica.
8. Last but not the least use a board spectrum SPF with minimum 30 & PA++.
*Follow a healthy diet rich with essential fatty acids(ALA & GLA, they reduces skin inflammation)& antioxidants.
* Limited your face wash & scrubbing routine.
* Avoid using harsh skin care ingredients.
* Listen to your skin.
