Summary:
Screen-based electronics such as laptops, computers and smartphones all emit light of a blue wavelength. When using these devices at night, this blue light emitted from our devices can end up tricking our brains into thinking it’s still daytime out, making it more difficult for us to fall asleep. According to several studies, using our phones and computers too late into the evening can have a negative effect on our brains’ natural sleep-wake cycles, which, in turn, can negatively impact our ability to maintain a proper sleep cycle.
These signals from the brain are all well and good at times when you want to be awake and alert, but when you’re trying to wind down and get a few hours of shuteye, having your brain suddenly kick itself into overdrive is more of a nuisance than a benefit. Blue light also interferes with your pineal gland’s production of melatonin, making it not only harder to fall asleep, but also interferes with the quality of your sleep as well.
For those of you who want to continue using your devices well into the night, one possible solution might be in finding ways to block out the blue light from your screens. One potential way of doing this is by wearing amber-tinted glasses while using your electronics at night, as they might be able to help shield your eyes from unwanted blue light exposure. By shielding your eyes from the blue light using tinted glasses, your brain won’t receive the signals associated with daylight and you’ll be able to get ready for sleep as normal.
There are some other ways you can attempt to block out blue light when it’s close to bedtime as well. For example, there are certain computer programs available for download, such as f.lux (that’s F, period, L, U, X) that automatically adjust the brightness and colour settings of your screen based on your current time zone, switching out the regular blue light from your screen with an orange light during nighttime.
