Since 1960, there have been a total of 56 missions to the red rusty planet. Right now, there are six active satellites orbiting the planet, and down on the surface, the InSight lander and Curiosity rover are still going about their missions.

And soon NASA’s latest rover, Perseverance, will join them, assuming the rover lands safely on Mars.

Perseverance has a series of improvements including additional cameras, terrain-relative navigation, updated software, and new and improved wheels.

All these improvements hopefully mean that Perseverance can finally study more interesting parts of Mars that were previously off limits because of perilous terrain, like the mission’s chosen landing site: Jezero Crater.

Find out more about the mission, the landing techniques, the instruments aboard the rover, and more in this Elements.

NASA Announces Mars 2020 Rover Payload to Explore the Red Planet as Never Before

Scientists will use the Mars 2020 rover to identify and select a collection of rock and soil samples that will be stored for potential return to Earth by a future mission. The Mars 2020 mission is responsive to the science objectives recommended by the National Research Council's 2011 Planetary Science Decadal Survey.
